Frequently asked Organic Lawn Care questions
How should I be mowing?
Proper mowing practices are essential to creating a healthy environment for your lawn to thrive. The optimal cutting height for most cool-season grasses is around 4” and you should aim to cut no more than ⅓ of the blade in one cut. Mowing shorter—or cutting too much at one time—puts unnecessary stress on the grass making it less able to develop a good root system or to fight off disease, insects, drought, and even foot traffic.
Lastly, always try to recycle the clippings back into the lawn. Removing clippings from the turf reduces beneficial organic matter and up to 25% of your lawn’s Nitrogen, a critical macronutrient your grass needs throughout the growing season.
How much should I be watering?
Knowing how and when to water your lawn is crucial, especially ahead of the summer months when drought and/or heat stress can become an issue. If possible, water established turf in the early morning, between the hours of 4-8 am. Watering during the heat of the day will see much of the water wasted through evaporation. Watering in the evening or overnight allows moisture to sit on the grass for long periods of time, increasing the likelihood of fungal diseases developing.
While specific watering recommendations should be based on your soil type and composition, as a general rule, water infrequently (1-3 times per week), but deeply, targeting 1-2” of water per week from either rain or irrigation to ensure water penetrates the entire soil profile.
If your lawn is suffering from heat or drought stress, gradually increase the amount of water your lawn gets and monitor how it responds. You can also water the lawn midday for ~5-10 minutes simply to cool the turf off during the day’s hottest temperatures.
What can I do about pet damage?
Dog urine can burn your turf due to its high concentrations of nitrogen (urea). While Nitrogen is normally a highly desirable macronutrient for turfgrass, the concentration of the urine itself coupled with the relatively small area over which it is spread leads to phytotoxicity (a scientific word for plant damage). If possible, water the areas where your dog goes to the bathroom as soon as possible with a hose or watering can. This will help flush the urine through the soil and dilute the urea levels from reaching critical (toxic) levels. Also, dog defecation left on your lawn can cause problems and may eventually kill the turfgrass if left alone. We recommended picking it up as often as possible.
Should I do my spring clean up before or after your first Lawn Care service?
If you are just doing a light raking and cleaning up debris on your lawn, it does not matter either way. While we recommend any dethatching be done in the fall, if you plan to do this in the spring and are on a Lawn Care Program that comes with a pre-emergent crabgrass control, you should plan to dethatch before our first service. Disturbing the thatch and soil layers will break up our pre-emergent barrier and render it less effective.
You were just here for a Lawn Care service. Why are weeds still present?
Unless you have added a Natural Weed Control to your program, our Organic Lawn Care does not include weed control.
How do I know if I need a Grub Preventative?
Unfortunately, there is no way to test for grubs until they are actively feeding on your lawn’s roots. Applying a Grub Preventative is essentially an insurance policy for your lawn. If you receive a Grub Preventative and you still get a grub outbreak, we will treat the grubs and repair the lawn damage for free!
There are mushrooms on my property, what can I do?
Mushrooms are the reproductive part of fungi that live in the soil. Most of the time, fungi are hidden beneath the lawn beneficially breaking down organic material, but when conditions are right, they surface to reproduce. Although they can be unsightly, mushrooms indicate healthy soil and little can be done to prevent their presence in a lawn until soil conditions change.
What should I do if I have mole/vole activity?
As spring begins and the snow melts away, you may find that your lawn had some visitors over the winter. Moles and Voles are common tunnelers (voles above ground and moles below) and can cause some serious eyesores to your yard. Most of the damage will recover, but for those highly damaged areas, we recommend a slice seeding service to help repair the area.
Parts of my lawn dry up every year and turn brown, what can be done?
With drought and periods of less-than-average precipitation becoming ever more frequent, our Moisture Manager program can help your lawn retain moisture in the root zone to resist common heat and drought-related issues during the summer months.
Why do I need to fertilize in the summer?
Unless your lawn enters what is called “summer dormancy”, the root system remains active at this time. It is important to support the health and hardiness of the lawn with a special balance of macronutrients to help your lawn through summer stressors. We also inspect for insect and disease activity during these months.
I have leaves on my lawn, are you still going to perform services?
A small number of leaves on the lawn during a Lawn Care service will not negatively impact your treatment. The prills of fertilizer will roll off the leaves as they move or get raked up. Your Technician will not treat your lawn if the leaf cover is too dense.
It is best to continually collect or rake leaves throughout the fall so they don’t become too cumbersome to manage or build up into dense mats that can suffocate your lawn. A lawnmower with a bagger or a powered blower are often the easiest ways to manage leaf cleanup.
What if my lawn is still wet from the winter weather?
Our Technicians will walk the property before beginning service to ensure it can be done completely and safely. If your lawn is too wet or soft, we will reschedule your service.
How do I prepare my lawn for service?
It is recommended your lawn is clear of any obstacles before treatment so the Technician has a clean area to treat. This includes any yard debris, children’s toys, and pet bowls or waste. Please contact us if you would like to set up pre-service notifications via text or e-mail.
How long after services should I wait to go on serviced areas?
You should wait until after the product has dried, which depends on the weather conditions. On warmer, drier days, our products can dry in as little as an hour or two. Cooler, cloudier days or days with high humidity or post-treatment rainfall might take up to 24 hours. One way to tell if the product has dried is to spray a walkway or patio with water. If that dries out, it is likely our product is dry as well.
How long will it take to get my desired results?
Results can and will vary as not all lawns start out in the same condition. Our Account Managers and Technicians would be happy to talk to you about your lawn and your expectations. We also offer free on-site assessments and comprehensive Soil Tests to measure what is going on in your soil at the molecular level so we can customize a program for you.
Are your products safe?
All of our technicians are fully licensed and trained to follow best management practices and all products we use are applied according to manufacturer guidelines to eliminate issues associated with overuse or misuse. We wouldn’t put anything on your lawn that we wouldn’t personally feel comfortable putting on our own family’s lawn.
Can I just get one service?
Lawn care is an ongoing process, you couldn’t simply expect to go to the gym once and be in shape forever. The key to a healthy lawn or a pest-free property is proper management and maintenance, season-to-season and year-to-year. With this in mind, our services are custom-tailored to give your property exactly what it needs from the start of the growing season in the spring all the way through the fall.
How long after services should I wait to go on serviced areas?
You should wait until after the product has dried (if a liquid was applied), which depends on the weather conditions.
It rained after your service. Will you come back and re-service?
It is not a guarantee that post-treatment rainfall will render our service ineffective. It will actually help water in our granular products and all of our liquid products are mixed with a special tackifier to ensure on-target application and enhanced residual, even after post-treatment rainfall.
Of course, if the effectiveness of our service was hampered by the rain, we will stand behind our work and make it right.
I saw one of your Technicians on my street today. Why didn’t you service my property too?
It could be one of many reasons like weather or specific conditions of your property not suitable for service that day. Most of the time, it is because your property was not ready for service.
While we do try to schedule our Technicians to spend more time on properties and less time driving, we never sacrifice our service quality to make that happen. All of our programs are designed with specific intervals between treatments. If it is not the appropriate time to service your property, we will come back when it is!
When will you be out for my first service?
Our New England springs are difficult to manage when it comes to weather. Be it rain, wind, or a freak snowstorm, we are always adjusting on the fly. We only schedule one day in advance so we can adapt to conditions in real-time without over-promising and under-delivering. We will be out on your property as soon as we can!
How can I pay for my service?
We have three convenient payment options offering a mix of flexibility and savings opportunities.
Do you offer a referral discount?
Yes! If you refer a friend and they sign up for services, you will both receive $50. There is no limit to the number of referral discounts current customers can earn!
Do you offer prepayment discounts?
Yes! To qualify, you must prepay for the entire season upfront. This discount will vary depending on the time of the year. For the greatest discount, make sure to prepay by December 31st!
Do you offer a senior discount?
We focus on providing excellent value with the services we perform, so we don’t offer a senior discount specifically. We do, however, offer prepayment and referral discounts.
Do you offer a military discount?
Thank you very much for your service. We do not offer a military discount, but we do participate in the Greencare for Troops program. If you or your spouse are deployed, we will treat your lawn at no charge during deployment. The application process is very easy and we can assist you through it.
I’m moving, can I bring my service with me?
Of course! As long as your new home is within our service area, we’d be more than happy to get you set up. No two properties are the same, though, so we recommend at least a Soil Test so we can get started on customizing a program to best fit your new lawn. Call, e-mail, or Live Chat us to get the process started today.
